Project Description
Norman’s Diner Kelowna
After the success of the 1st restaurant in Lake Country (also designed by House of Bohn), Norman’s, the adorable breakfast diner, expands its franchise with a sequel. The second location, located in the growing community of Rutland in Kelowna, BC, is a 3,800 SQFT space with 90-seats inside, and ample patio space and seating outside.
Taking cues from the interior design of the first restaurant, House of Bohn amplifies the diner brand by leaning into its concept of “remnants of a simpler time.” This nostalgic notion is articulated through the retro diner references such as the warm brown and cream checkered tiles in the entry, the checkered painted ceiling tiles in the dining room, and to complete the overall design, these diner cues are paired with a farmhouse aesthetic. The modern farmhouse charm is represented with rustic brick walls and local repurposed barn board. The room is casual and quaint, and it has a “sweet” quality to it, yet it maintains the appeal of a thoughtful modern restaurant.
With the already established and consistent customer base in Lake Country, it was important to the owners that their new location offers the same consistency and sense of community. Key words for this restaurant concept include “comfortable & welcoming,” “farm-fresh,” and “a sense of community.” To reflect these principals throughout the interior design, House of Bohn ensured that seating was plush and family-friendly, that elements such as white-washed weathered interior windows were on display as well as rustic wood throughout to room, and that the art & décor was curated locally from the Okanagan.
“Karin Bohn leads a terrific design team. Karin, first and foremost, has a great designer’s instinct which emerges from listening hard and getting a feel for that something intangible that you need to pull together. She searches out that creation that is both in alignment with the client’s subjective vision, but is also contemporary and attached to a developing brand or a purpose that her design must yield to. Karin pulls her team effectively into her vision and, for us with our restaurants, things have unfolded beautifully and successfully. It has been massively comforting and exciting to work in partnership with House of Bohn.”
